The Pines Club is an intimate Fire Island retreat reimagined as a private home rooted in the island’s cultural history. Located in the Pines, a long-standing center of queer life and creative expression, the property was originally built as the personal residence of legendary interior designer Valerian Rybar. His bold, expressive approach to interiors became a point of inspiration as the home was thoughtfully reinterpreted for modern living.
The design draws from Rybar’s visual language while translating it into a more modern home befit for the Pines. Materials, color palettes, wallcoverings, and furnishings were selected with intention, referencing the past while feeling fresh and current. The result is a home that balances personality with comfort, offering spaces that feel layered, inviting, and expressive without feeling overworked.
The residence includes seven guest suites, a central gathering space, a pool, and access to private waterfront. Each area was designed to support both quiet retreat and social gatherings, with a natural flow that connects interior spaces to the surrounding landscape. Custom wallpapers, bespoke lighting, and a sculptural central kitchen anchor the shared spaces, creating warmth and focus while maintaining a sense of ease and balance.
Guest rooms are designed as individual sanctuaries, featuring custom headboards, layered lighting, and curated artwork. Outdoor living spaces extend the home’s rhythm, from the pool deck to shaded bayside lounges, encouraging connection to nature.
The Pines Club is a personal retreat shaped by history, craft, and place, offering an elevated yet relaxed environment deeply connected to the spirit of Fire Island.
