The Nugget series is an exploration of reduced platonic cubic form. The first iteration of this series is the Nugget Hollow. This sculptural furniture piece can function as a stool, side table, lamp or purely as a sculptural object. For Nugget Hollow we wanted to play with color and light and test how colored void can be illuminated internally and then throw soft colored light to the surrounding walls, ceilings and floors. A small but dynamic piece that pushes back on its surroundings. The Nugget Hollow won Honoree for Best of Year from Interior Design Magazine in 2013.

Following Nugget Hollow, we designed Nugget Mirror. This iteration of the Nugget family uses reflection as its operative language.  It is constructed of laminated birch veneers, creating a super solid form that blurs the lines of materiality.  This piece explores the resurgent craft of Wendell Castle’s seminal works, but stems from an interest in rigid geometric, non-organic form.  The top facet of this piece is mirror polished stainless steel, making for a highly reflective crisp visual that sometimes mirrors its surroundings while at other times it appears to be a black hole.

Concurrent to Nugget Mirror we developed the Nugget Solid. This heavy timeless piece sits solid as a laminated stack of solid birch wood. Polished to perfection, there is a softness in its solidity. These pieces have one face that is made of solid brass plate. We wanted to play with soft reflections from the brass and polished birch faces.

We then developed the solid nugget form further by exploring various post-production applications. For Nugget Carbon we torched the entire unit and let it naturally burn from the outside in. Once doused and fully dried, we sanded down the roughened surface until it was once again smooth and stable. The result is a heavily tactile piece that is irresistible to the touch.

Finally we refined Nugget Carbon into a more predictably producible result by pre-charring cedar planks and then constructing Nugget Cedar as a planar form. The Nugget series came full circle back to its planar roots.
